When flowing, lava can be often be seen day or night. Due to flight departure times from Hilo, visits to the lava viewing area regularly conclude at approximately 7pm. If you desire to see lava at night, please be sure to check the time of predicted sunset during the season in which you are planning to visit to determine darkness for lava viewing. Because of the ever-changing intensity and course of lava activity, viewing areas are subject to change as deemed necessary by Hawaii Civil Defense. Additionally, please be aware that lava flows are a naturally occurring event and sightings are not guaranteed.

We do not guarantee the viewing of active lava flow or other natural events. Volcanic fumes (VOG) are hazardous to your health.
