Hawaii Big Island Towns & Districts

Towns

Hawaii Big Island is divided into several towns and district. Some towns are next to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, others are on the black sandy beaches while others are right in the middle of the tropical rainforest.

  • Hilo—Shielded by two volcanoes; an active volcano, Mauna Loa, and a dormant one, Mauna Kea.  Hilo is the seat of the County of Hawaii.
  • Kona—The District of Kona expands about 60 miles from the Kona International Airport to the lava- streamed west coast of the island. This was the final resting place for King Kamehameha and it remains today as the place of gathering for shopping, nightlife and restaurants.
  • Kohala—Consists of both and south Kohala. The Kohala Coast is known for outstanding seafront resorts and golf courses.
  • Puna—The increase in housing and tourism developments have made Puna the fastest growing region in Hawaii Big Island.
  • Hamakua—The geography of this region is dominated by the volcanic mountain Mauna Kea from the south, to the summit of Mauna Loa.  Many of its communities sprung around the sugar demand and plantations.
  • Kau—The South Point (Ka Lae) within Kau, is the southernmost point of any of the US States

Districts

The Big Island of Hawaii uses districts instead of regions to refer to the different geographical areas. The island of Oahu and Maui use North Shore or South Shore to refer to an area.  The below district descriptions are very useful when figuring your way around the sites you may want to visit.

  • Hamakua—The Hamakua district is located on the northeast. The popular attractions within this district are:  Waipio Valley and Pololu Valley. These areas are lush; the coastline is sandy but mixed with lava rocks.
Hilo—Hilo is the island capital and is wet with over 130 inches of rain per year. There are some great attractions including the black sand beaches, Liliuokalani gardens, and the popular Rainbow Falls.
  • Puna—Puna district is very lush with exotic vegetation and is famous for its many freshwater springs and volcanically heated tide pools. The highlight of Puna is Kalapana, a lava viewing area. Also the district has Kaimu Black Sand beach.
  • Kau—Kau district is where most of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is located, including the Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanoes.
  • Punaluu—Black Sand Beach and Papakolea (Green Sand) Beach are some of the popular attractions in this district.
  • South Kona—South Kona district is famous for its coffee plantation, the beautiful Kealakekua Bay, and historical Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park.
  • North Kona—Kailua-Kona town is located in this district offering the visitors great beaches and many cultural attractions, as well as Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park and Kekaha Kai State Park. Also, the world-famous Ironman World Championship Triathlon takes place each year in October in Kailua-Kona.  North Kona, together with South Kohala, is the region where most Big Island visitors are headed. The majority of the accommodation options (hotels, resorts, vacation condos) are located here.
  • South Kohala—South Kohala is located on the Big Island's northwest shore. Popular visitor attractions in South Kohala are the white-sand Hapuna Beach, Mauna Kea Beach, Puukohola Heiau and the inland town of Waimea (Kamuela), located in at an upcountry elevation of 2,670 feet (814 m). Waimea is often times called “paniolo (cowboy) country” and is a fun place to visit especially on Independence Day (July 4) when the Parker Ranch rodeo and horse races take place here. The South Kohala coast is home to numerous luxury resorts, as well as championship golf courses. South Kohala is the driest area on the Big Island. In fact, it is quite desert-like here with only 10 inches (254 mm) of rainfall per year.
  • North Kohala—North Kohala is located on the Big Island's north shore. Popular visitor attractions in North Kohala are the Lapakahi State Historical Park, Mookini Heiau and the birthplace of King Kamehameha the Great.

Waikoloa Beach Resort and Petroglyph Park

Situated on the Kona Coast, Waikoloa Beach is home to a flawless range of various petroglyphs. Most guests access this site via the Hilton Waikoloa Village. There are few resorts on the planet which contrast with the care which has gone into making a the wonderful environment for visitors at Hilton Waikoloa Village. Kamehameha I spent the last years of his life at Ahuena Heiau. As indicated by Hawaiian custom, his bones were expelled from his carcass on a stone stage in the sanctuary and taken north, conceivably to Wawahiwa Point, where they were left at a mystery area.

His child and successor, Kamehameha II, grew up here and this territory wound up annulling the tabus, idols and sanctuaries during his rule.

As an archipelago, Hawaii is home to many beaches, each having its own arrangement of interesting qualities. What makes one shoreline awesome for surfers and water-sports aficionados does not really make for an extraordinary goal for families or vacationers hoping to unwind on the shore.

To help pick your ideal beach interest, the accompanying rundown is a list what are generally considered to be the main five shorelines on Big Island. To help pick your ideal beach interest, the accompanying rundown is a list what are generally considered to be the main five shorelines on Big Island.

Hapuna Beach

Vacationers adore Hapuna Beach, found only north of Kona, for some reasons. Above all else, the beach includes a long extension of delicate smooth sand that leads to clear sea water. Swimming conditions are normally incredible here, and talented snorkelers can go almost a mile down the drift to reach Wailea Bay. Rich, wonderful greenery encompasses the broad shoreline, which turns out to be about 200 feet wide amid the midyear months, offering a lot of space to play.

Maniniowali Beach

Situated on Kua Bay in Kona, Maniniowali Beach is often called "The Caribbean of Hawaii," thanks to some extent to its fine white-sand shorelines that tenderly incline toward the perfectly clear water. The sickle shaped shoreline is one of the best places for swimming when the water is quiet, generally amid the morning hours. The surf can get unpleasant, nonetheless, at which unpracticed swimmers ought to search for a more settled, more secured beach. Maniniowali likewise is a most popular destination for body boarders and snorkelers, whom can anticipate seeing ocean turtles and tropical fish in the submerged rocks and coral.

Makalawena Beach

This northern shoreline is similarly as beautiful and peaceful as the close-by Maniniowali Beach, but since the best way to get to Makalawena is by means of a 20-minute climb over an unpaved lava path, the shoreline frequently is uncrowded. For this situation, it pays to go "out of the way," as Makalawena is one of the Big Island's most fantastic shorelines, with sand delicate as powder and water so clear it sparkles in the sun. Makalawena is ideal for swimming and sunbathing, while shallow coral reefs are an ideal setting to discover underwater coral and caves.

Mauna Kea Beach

Found only just north of Hapuna Beach on the island's northern coast, Mauna Kea Beach is really one of the Big Island's most remarkable destinations. The sand at Mauna Kea Beach, otherwise called Kaunaoa Beach, stretches out for right around a fourth of a mile, framing an ideal crescent shape around the Mauna Kea Resort. A characteristic reef gives some assurance from the surf, making Mauna Kea Beach perfect for swimming, snorkeling and boogie boarding.

Waialea Bay

Situated on the southern segment of Kawaihae Bay, Waialea Bay is one of the island's most popular beaches; however it is not especially simple to get to. The shoreline itself really dissolves because of solid surf in the winter months, so the best time to visit is the mid of the year when it is perfect. The bay's diverse quality of marine life is among the best in all of Kawaihae Bay, making it a most loved site for snorkel and scuba exercises. The sand delicately slants into the water, making conditions close ideal for swimmers and families with young kids. Delicate sand, tide pools and shady trees make Waialea Bay feel significantly more like a private space.
